How to design camera module prototype

Motoshot

The design and development of the camera module is to customize the camera module that meets the application according to the actual use of the customers. During the design process, we utilize specification loops to review and validate which requirements are prioritized and how they affect each other.

Image quality can be defined according to application requirements, including image resolution, frame rate, and these choices also have an impact on other hardware, such as power consumption and cost.

Therefore, we need to consider the actual situation:

What is the minimum resolution that your application needs to achieve?

Is the camera module mainly used to work in a light environment or in a dark environment?

Need to play video or just take still pictures? Is there a minimum frame rate requirement?

Would you like your camera to be able to shoot wide angle? How far is the target object intended to be from the camera?

Based on these practical applications, we can now investigate which image sensor is right for your needs. We also match the sensor to your application based on your budget. Pixel count, frame rate and pixel size are the most important criteria.
When the application scene is at night, we can choose to add IR LED and IR-Cut. In this way, the camera module can obtain color images during the day and high contrast and low color images in low light conditions. Another possibility is to choose a light sensor with low illumination. This also provides a very nice color picture in low light, but with lower contrast compared to IR LEDs.

Another very important thing is the choice of lens. The main parameters of the lens are:

Focal length f. f=wL/W or f=hl/H. Now the usual effective focal length f=3.5mm or 2.5mm

Field of View FOV. Most people like a large FOV, but the larger the FOV, the smaller f is required, and the more serious the distortion is.

F value. F no.=f/A. f is the focal length and A is the diameter of the aperture. The larger the F, the smaller the A, and the smaller the amount of incoming light.

Aperture. A mechanism inside the lens that can be used to control the size of the aperture.

Depth of field. The larger the aperture, the smaller the depth of field.

The main indicators of Lens: A. Eliminate as much Flare as possible. B, picture quality clarity. C. CRA (Chief Ray Angle) should be matched to reduce shading. D. The aperture is as large as possible. E. Distortion is as slight as possible, etc.

CRA: Chief Ray of Angle, Lens CRA < Sensor CRA, the difference is preferably within 2 degrees, otherwise it will easily cause shadow or color cast.

In addition, according to the actual application requirements, some customers need an AF module. In this case, a VCM (voice coil motor) needs to be added. The full name of VCM is Voice Coil Motor, a voice coil motor in electronics, which is a type of motor. Because the principle is similar to that of a speaker, it is called a voice coil motor, which has the characteristics of high frequency response and high precision. The main principle is that in a permanent magnetic field, the stretching position of the spring sheet is controlled by changing the DC current of the coil in the motor, thereby driving the up and down movement. Mobile phone cameras widely use VCM to achieve auto-focus function, and the position of the lens can be adjusted through VCM to present a clear image.

The mechanical size of the camera module is also a part of what we need to consider.

Basically, all the shapes of different camera modules can be designed and produced correspondingly, and can be directly connected to FPC or B to B connectors.

If customer expects to have camera module size as compact as possible, a MIPI-CSI type module is usually be considered, Another widely used module is the USB camera module, except making a single camera module, it also could be made in to form of MIPI camera module + USB PCB board .

One of the most critical parts of the product development process is choosing the right components for your product. Selecting the right components is a custom job, as the design process for each product is unique.

Whether it is for consumer goods or industrial supplies, we will fully evaluate your needs and tailor the most suitable camera module for you.
